About Our Plant Listings
AFNN lists only Florida native plants. Cultivars are listed as Florida native cultivars if they originate within certain ecoregions as defined in our Listing of Cultivars policy.
With some exceptions, AFNN generally lists plants identified as native in the Guide to the Vascular Plants of Florida, second edition, by Dr. Richard P. Wunderlin and Bruce F. Hansen, University Press of Florida, 2003. Exceptions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Cordia sebestena, Geiger tree, is listed as native
- Two varieties of slash pine are recognized: Pinus elliottii var. densa (South Florida slash pine) and P. elliottii var. elliottii (North Florida slash pine).
- Juniperus silicola and J. virginiana are listed as separate species.
- Quercus laurifolia and Q. hemisphaerica are listed as separate species.
Where regional or local species variation occurs, AFNN growers are encouraged to name varieties to indicate these variations until such time as the variety is recognized by taxonomists in an official flora of the state. Examples include Chrysobalanus icaco ‘Horizontal,’ Ulmus americana ‘Florida population,’ and Roystonia regia ‘Florida population.’
