Freshwater Marshes Zone 9

Differ from swamps in that vegetation is primarily herbaceous instead of woody, and accumulations of large amounts of peat on top of sediments or limestone is common. Most marsh plants need fertile soils and standing water most of the year to do well. Plants tolerate some shade but not salt exposure. Water depth determines the distribution of floating, submerged and emergent aquatic plants.
